Haverford Schools Raise lunch
http://www.delcotimes.com/WebApp/appmanager/

PENNSYLVANIA: This Philadelphia Inquirer editorial notes that every day, 100,000 of the city's students eligible for free school breakfast skip the meal which could help them academically, reduce discipline problems, and improve attendance, as studies have shown. Only 50,000 students currently participate, compared to 100,000 students participating in the free lunch program. Uniform participation guidelines would help improve these numbers, requiring more principals to increase participation. As the federal child nutrition programs reimburse much of a school's cost in offering free breakfasts, funding should not be an issue. Schools can look to successful implementation models, such as Newark, New Jersey's breakfast in the classroom initiative, and Miami, Florida's universal breakfast program. The interim chief operating officer of Philadelphia's schools, Fred Farlino, is commended in this piece for his plans to get more students to eat breakfast in the 2008-2009 school year.

1.      New Certification Program Begins September 1, 2008

SNA’s New Certification Program was unveiled and well received at the National Leadership Conference in Colorado Springs, CO. Presenters of the program were Sandra Ford, SNS, Chair of the Certification and Credentialing Task Force and Danny Seymour, SNA Dean of Education.

SNA has developed a presentation that describes the new requirements for all levels of certification along with the new Trainer Certification program.  SNA Leaders are encouraged to use the presentation during upcoming chapter meetings or conferences to make members aware of the new requirements.  Those interested in pursuing certification or who are currently certified with SNA are also encouraged to review the requirements noted in the presentation.

To download the presentation, please visit our website at www.schoolnutrition.org and click on "Certification".

Next Steps:

Printable version of the Certification Guide will be posted on SNA’s website in a few weeks.

Hardcopies of the Certification Guide will be available at ANC 2008.

New Certification Program implementation date is September 1, 2008.

3.      Be Sure Your Chapter Leaders are Attending ANC’s Chapter Leadership Day!

Be sure to encourage your chapter leaders to attend the third annual Chapter Leadership Day on Saturday, July 19, from 10am-3pm at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. This program is led by three past state presidents and will focus on important topics, such as leading effective meetings, your leadership year and membership recruitment. The cost is $25 and includes lunch.  You can register online for ANC and Chapter Leadership Day at www.schoolnutrition.org and clicking on ANC.

4.      Action Alert: Food Prices Impacting School Meals

Due to the increase in food, milk and energy costs, combined with high labor and benefits costs, the federal school meal reimbursement no longer covers the cost to prepare a balanced, nutritious school meal. SNA is currently reviewing all legislative options to help address this crisis. You can take action now by emailing your Senators and Member of Congress to share how rising food prices are impacting your school nutrition program. Thank you to all SNA members who have already contacted Congress, over 1,000 messages were sent to members of Congress in May.
