Schools Raise lunch

PENNSYLVANIA:
This Philadelphia Inquirer editorial notes that every day,
100,000 of the city's students eligible for free school breakfast
skip the meal which could help them academically, reduce
discipline problems, and improve attendance, as studies have
shown. Only 50,000 students currently participate, compared to
100,000 students participating in the free lunch program. Uniform
participation guidelines would help improve these numbers,
requiring more principals to increase participation. As the
federal child nutrition programs reimburse much of a school's
cost in offering free breakfasts, funding should not be an issue.
Schools can look to successful implementation models, such as
Newark, New Jersey's breakfast in the classroom initiative, and
Miami, Florida's universal breakfast program. The interim chief
operating officer of Philadelphia's schools, Fred Farlino, is
commended in this piece for his plans to get more students to eat
breakfast in the 2008-2009 school year.

Action Alert: Food Prices
Impacting School Meals
Due to the
increase in food, milk and energy costs, combined with high labor
and benefits costs, the federal school meal reimbursement no
longer covers the cost to prepare a balanced, nutritious school
meal. SNA is currently reviewing all legislative options to help
address this crisis. You can take action now by emailing your
Senators and Member of Congress to share how rising food prices
are impacting your school nutrition program. Thank you to all SNA
members who have already contacted Congress, over 1,000
messages were sent to members of Congress in May.
